Our Expert Speakers
Tony Wheeler, Founder, Lonely Planet
Travelling across Asia on the ‘hippie trail’ of the 1970s led to the creation of Lonely Planet Publications.
From those early guidebooks Lonely Planet Publications has grown to become the world’s largest independent guidebook publisher with more than 500 titles in print, over 500 staff and offices in London and Oakland as well as the head office in Melbourne. One hundred million books – plus websites, digital publications, smart phone apps, a photo library and TV productions. In 2011 we completed the sale of Lonely Planet to BBC-Worldwide which hasn’t stopped Tony travelling. In the past year he’s climbed volcanoes in the Congo and tracked down the wreckage of Admiral Yamomoto’s Betty bomber in the jungles of Papua New Guinea.
Bruce Poon Tip, Founder, G Adventures
Founder of G Adventures, Bruce has been one of sustainable tourism's most active proponents for more than 20 years. As Bruce sees it, there is no box to think outside of anymore, and concepts like 'freedom' and 'happiness' can—and in G Adventures' case, do—make for a functional and successful business model.
Jason Edwards, Photo Journalist, National Geographic
With an image portfolio ranking among the largest of any photographer in the National Geographic Society's long history, Melbourne-based photo journalist Jason Edwards is the face of Pure Photography on National Geographic Channel. This series of natural history vignettes accompanies him on assignment as he chronicles the world's natural wonders through a lens. Redefining documentary photography over the course of more than 20 years, Jason's commissioned assignments having taken him to every continent, with the resultant work appearing in hundreds of publications including National Geographic Magazine, Australian Geographic, Sports Illustrated, BBC Wildlife Magazine, The New Yorker, and Conde Nast Traveller.
